How to Glaze a Window
To keep your home from unwanted air or water; ensure your windows are tightly sealed by replacing window glazing after a given period. Although glazing demands some time and skill, it is possible for you to do it by yourself by using the tips explained below.
Gather your supplies. You should make sure you have all the items that will be needed to glaze your window. The things that will help you glaze a window correctly include putty, a putty knife, clean rags, sandpaper, paintbrushes, paint, adhesive tape, and more. Chances are, most of these items are in your house or garage but if you do not have them, they are available at your local hardware.
Remove the old putty and glass. You need to tape a newspaper to the two sides of the window pane. Secondly, damage the glass using a hammer and separate it from the pane. The other thing is to make the putty lose by the use of the putty knife. In case the putty gives stress in coming out when a knife is being used, use a blow torch to get it melted. You should get the frames free of the metal fasteners.
You should smooth the wood. Ensure you make the wood smooth with the help of the sandpaper. After the wood is sufficiently smoothened, it should be treated using the oil-based primer then sealed off. Applying the primer is helpful because it prevents oil absorption which can make cracks to be seen on the glazing sooner, meaning more drafts. Leave the primer for about 24 hours to dry.
Ensure you knead the putty. After kneading the putty till it is soft, stretch it along the window panes inside and press it with your fingers. Using the putty knife, ensure it is fixed as tight as possible. After the putty is placed fit the new glass pane.
Ensure you apply new glazing. Place glazier points at the center of the window pane and press the point into place using the putty knife. Ensure each side of the window pane has glazier points then put another glazing on the window frame. Put pressure so that the glazing can hold the glass pane securely. Trim out the excess putty.
Ensure you permit the glazing to dry then paint it. Ensure you leave the glazing for a period of ten days for drying purpose. You may be irritated with fingerprints being on the glass but do not clean it until it is dry. You should clean up the window using the oil-based primer as well as the paint while making sure it aligns with your houses other windows.
